Chapter 4

Persistence beyond unimaginable odds.

This is the unwavering will to carry on despite outright pointlessness as per dictated by society's mores and culture. An unmoved, protruding boulder of rock on a riverbed; mindless of the eventual erosion it is heading to. The stubborn decision to penetrate the thickness of the jungle, armed with a bleak, foolish hope that wildlife is just a mere figment of a scout ranger's reverie.

This is the lesson I learned from the tale of a Palace Maiden and a Royal Kitchen Lady

Lady Han's wisdom is confounding yet altogether enlightening. Water is not simply water. It may serve as food and cure for someone's ailing body, and the demand for it varies according to one's specific needs. Had Jang Geum failed to go on, she would have never understood the value of things often left aside by the simple minded; common things like water, that pose as one of the many ordinary elements of what constitutes the totality of humanity's existence. Had the young lass fallen into the trap of rationalizing the chore she was tasked to do, she would have never learned Persistence in bare flesh and truth.

I am just as amazed with her response. At a glance, I was quick to figure out her possible pitfalls and success ladders. As a child, her patience and attention are underdeveloped. This is evident on most feeding time scenarios where mothers have to force their way to their children's appetite. And yet, when something captivates their attentions, they would almost freeze to fixation until they swallow it whole. This second inclination is normal for anything tangible but not for tasks or physical activities.

However, Jang Geum took the road less traveled. She went on despite the fact that her persistence rewarded her not only a special place in Lady Han's heart, but an unsurmountable determination to live the life of the grasses; always being uprooted and yet springing back to life.

Most notably, it was her persistence despite the obvious absurdity of the task that laid one of the many bricks on the long road towards her rise one day as the Dae Jang Geum of Ancient Chosun Dynasty.
